IISER: Indian Institute of Science Education and Research
Everybody knows that IITs are the final word for engineering education in India. Every parent wishes to get their child to clear IIIT JEE and study there. Every city in India has got plenty of IIT JEE Coaching Centres. Engineering has become one of the trending higher education option (specifically for parents, I must add!) in the last few decades and it is good that everybody is aware of the top institutes in the domain. But, what about basic sciences? Is there any place comparable to IITs for learning basic sciences? Most people will say No. But fortunately, there is. Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, IISER in short, is the pioneer institution in India for basic sciences. Here is everything you need to know about IIISERs.

IISER, or IISERs, are a group of premier research educational institutions for basic sciences in India. Established with an intention to become IITs of basic sciences, IISERs have been declared as institutions of national importance by the Government of India. There are 7 IISERs operational now and the eight one has be announced to start in Nagaland. Here is the list of the 7 Indian Institute of Science Education and Research in the chronological order:
- IISER Pune, Maharastra
- IISER Kolkata, West Bengal
- IISER Mohali, Punjab
- IISER Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh
- IISER Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala
- IISER Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh
- IISER Behrampur, Odisha
BS-MS Degree Programme
IISERs offer a five year Integrated BS-MS programme. Admission to the integrated degree is carried out via three channels:
IIT JEE Advanced
Students who clear JEE advanced are eligible for applying to the BS-MS programme.
Kishore Vaigynaik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a fellowship program for basic sciences funded by Department of Science and Technology of Government of India. Students who are in 11th or 12th standard can write the entrance exam for KVPY and they will receive the scholarship for 2 years.
State and Central Boards
Students who secure excellent marks in the state and central boards are eligible to secure direct admission to IISERs.

IISER Aptitude Test
The format of the aptitude test is as follows:
- Multiple-choice questions in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics with equal weightage.
- 15 questions in each subject out of a total 60 questions.
- Duration of the test will be 180 minutes.
- 3 marks for each correct answer and -1 for each wrong answer.
