Making Quora Your Learning Companion
If you are reading this, I assume you love to learn new things. If you haven’t heard about Quora yet, I will be disappointed. If you have heard about it but haven’t started using it, I will be more than disappointed. But, at the same time, I will be happy because I am getting a chance to introduce this cool resource to you. Quora is basically a Question-Answer website. Wikipedia says and I quote: “Quora is a question-and-answer site where questions are asked, answered, edited and organized by its community of users.”
“So, What is the big deal about it? There are thousands of forums and QA sites out there. What is that Quora has that others don’t?”
Yes. I agree. There are a great number of similar websites there. But, what makes Quora different is the focus on experience rather than intellect. When you have a question, you will find 99 guys out of 100 who will explain what it means. But, there is always that one guy who makes you understand why it is the way it is. Quora is that one guy!
The First Step: Understanding Quora
When I think about Quora, I think of it as a person. A person with a great number of stories to tell and the collected wisdom of all its contributors. If you want to make Quora your learning companion, you first have to understand Quora. We have already stated what Quora is. Understanding how Quora works is also a crucial factor. To help with that, I guess there is nothing better than this Quora question ‘How do I get started using Quora’ and the awesome discussion that follows. (See, you are starting to use Quora to learn!)
Choose Your Interests
Quora helps you to build a personalized feed based on your interests and the people you follow. Select the categories and topics that you find interesting and your feed will get all the latest updates. Quora also has a great guide on how to customize your feed. You can read that here. It won’t be a waste of time, I assure.
This is the most important rule. It may take some time for you to be able to explain something or share your experience in a field. But, it takes absolutely no time to shoot your first question. Don’t hesitate. Even for the fraction of a second. Asking the right question is important, But, asking at the right time is what really matters.
This is the second stage. Once you start getting a feel of it, unleash the spirits within and share your valuable experiences and wisdom with other fellow users. Start answering questions that are related to your are of expertise. Share your experiences where it matters. And slowly, you will be on the go.
Explore! Explore! Explore!
It is all about exploring. Quora is a deep ocean. You will take some time to find your path. But, once you learn how to tame the wind and set your course, you will be unstoppable. Here are some links to get you started. First one is a list of questions that every new Quora user should check out. The other one is some of the most upvoted answers in Quora.
